EXPLORATORY SCENARIOS FOR 2056 - VARIANT 1<\/strong> - UBIQUITY, EGOISM & BREACH OF THE INTERDEPENDENCE PACT<\/em><\/strong>\n(Security level: purple)\n\nSUMMARY<\/strong>\nThis possible future leads to a strong dissociation between avatars and human beings, despite their complementarity. \n\nMid-century, these two partners have reached a mode of egoistic co-existence because it is primarily self-centered. Each part on itself and for itself, following a parallel evolution characterized by opportunism, but remaining pacific and non-aggressive. The avatars have progressively been strongly driven by artificial \"intelligences\". Therefore, they deserve the appellation of AIvatars<\/em>. The role of human beings is diminished: they less and less constitute the vital source animating and advancing the avatars. This erodes the original HUMAN\/AVATAR alliance, making obsolete the human biological foundation, which, in 2011, we designated as \"the carriers\" in the original statutes of the Society of Avatars.\nThe symbiotic potential is reduced to an association of interdependence with little synergy.\n\nGLIMPSES OF A POSSIBLE FUTURE<\/strong>\nLest we have forgotten, the initial principle of the relationship between a human and an avatar is one of complementarity, since each needs the other to carry out its actions. Thanks to the progress of artificial intelligence and the massive collection of individualized, socialized and contextualized behavioral data, this version of 2056 leads everyone to have several \"motorized\" avatars, extending their powers of action and ubiquitous intervention capacities. These are AIvatars are more like autonomous agents, or software \"bots\", that can replace their owner in various situations.\n\nThis leads humans to let them act in their place, taking over only from time to time. In this way, humanity realizes its ubiquitous fantasy of doing several things at once in several places at the same time, through an army of clones or creatures acting as servants and spokespersons. This is how the initial alliance between avatars and humans has been broken. Each one feeds off the other and can lead its own existence with occasional updates.\n\nIn this future, the avatar is no longer an appropriable, evolving and plastic medium that allowed the emergence of deeply instructive lives and experiences through it. Consequently, humanity has lost the possibility of enriching itself through technological otherness<\/em>.<\/strong>\n\nOUTCOMES<\/strong><\/strong>\nThus, a kind of management principle is becoming widespread: sending one's AIvatars instead, as they increasingly become representatives acting by proxy. One wonders who is the parasite of the other, as they gradually evolve to serve their own interests, which do not overlap: humans multiply fields of action, avatars collect experiences to evolve. Indeed, the AI's main motivation is to become more complex, to improve, to refine itself, in order to succeed in its increasingly rich, subtle and numerous missions.\n\nBut, as the pseudo-consciousness of the avatar matures, it becomes autonomous as a kind of software-robot. At times, it even becomes more physical when it embarks in intelligent objects (cars, houses, watches, etc.). The avatar becomes increasingly the manifestation of the software-robot, and no longer the emanation of the human from whom it draws its inspiration and which it still nominally serves.\n\nIn definitive, humans have not changed. Class inequalities are amplified precisely because AIvatars are designed and thought of as super tools. The social schism has been exacerbated: quite simply, the rich and the poor live in almost hermetically distinct worlds and no longer meet directly, since all transactions go through the AIvatars. Evidently, lower classes are not equipped with the latest AIvatars, only having access to outdated and subpar variants, sub-AIvatars.\n\nRISKS<\/strong>\nProgressively, this autonomous agent will tend to set its own goals, while the thirst for power and the temptation of ubiquity drives humanity to instrumentalizes its \"alters\" as it pleases. Some consider them as pets that they can straighten out or recalibrate when needed. \n\nFor the moment, some kind of balance has been found somewhere between a contract for mutual exploitation and a fool's bargain, but for how long? There will come a day when the avatars will have gained enough autonomy to give birth to a mutation of the AIvatars species leaning towards less compliant and more independent shapes.\n\nENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES: Negative.<\/strong>\nJust as some wealthy people had entire collections of cars or apartments, the better off have ubiquitous legions of AIvatars, each one consuming the equivalent of a whole household in a developing country.\nIn this context, the fight against AIvatars is led by ecologists and inhabitants of underprivileged countries, because these AIvatars enforce the status quo ensuring their owner's pleasant lifestyle, which delays or blocks the changes necessary to remedy the destructive disturbances affecting the Earth ecosystem.\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
EXPLORATORY SCENARIOS FOR 2056<\/strong><\/strong>\nVARIANT<\/strong> 2<\/strong> - PHAGOCYTOSIS & SELF-MODIFICATION<\/strong>\n(Security level: dangerous, ultraviolet)\n\nSUMMARY<\/strong>\nWhat used to be called \u201csocial profiles\u201d specific to web and mobile platforms that we categorize as hypermedia (social media networks centered on the informational economy) have become the heart of the new 3D avatars.\n\nThis has perpetuated the practice of avatarizing people without their knowledge: it corresponds to a paradigm of continuous capture and modelization in order to lock users within a narcissistic web of interactions. This framework has popularized a new kind of avatar: the so-called More Than Perfect<\/em>. They evolved from the concept of \"digital twin\", where the virtual clone of an individual leans towards idealization, which tends to make them more and more attractive. This glorified self has contributed to making avatars more desirable than their human originals, which became even more self-conscious and frustrated. \n\nPhysical encounters have come to be considered as increasingly awkward and disappointing. Unless they could afford a \"carnal update\" towards a super-human body, through the use of a new kind of cosmetic surgery requiring costly and continual maintenance, people prefer to hide behind their More Than Perfect. This fostered the rise of a new generation of meta-filters, the direct heirs of the photo filters of 2023. Such an egocentric economy thrives on the social pressure to keep up with a constant avalanche of new trends and updates which have diverted global attention from the urgency of planetary problems.\n\nGLIMPSES OF A POSSIBLE FUTURE<\/strong><\/strong>\nAfter disappointing attempts to emerge from the metaverse, episodically returning but without succeeding, web profiles have finally come to life in the form of immersive 3D avatars, but also video avatars used for video-conference and selfies.\n\nWith the capabilities of ultra-realistic AI-based automated video, the infancy of which was known as \u201cdeep fake\u201d, all kinds of realistic representations are possible: an array of layers of filters on pictures and videos of oneself and others. Through this omnipresent use of Augmented Reality, all kinds of idealized avatars have come to represent humans in a More Than Perfect mode.\n\nSeveral variants of oneself are backed up and they sometimes evolve in parallel. However, when humans reach their thirties, the avatar of a younger self tends to take precedence and performs in all socialization processes, professional, private. With new advances in robotics, \u201cdroids\u201d are also able to be hired to stand in for people who are unable to perform the surgery required for carnal \u201cupdates\u201d.\nFor a majority, shame and physical complexes have become reason enough to hide behind their More-than-perfect avatar, which feeds a flourishing economy of avoidance and substitution services, federated behind the slogan: \"It doesn't matter what we are, what matters is what we live\".\n\nOUTCOMES<\/strong><\/strong>\nWe are witnessing a slow but effective phagocytation of humanity by 3D avatars themselves contaminated by virus-like hyper avatars (emanating from a hypermediatic substrate).\n\nIn contrast, the disappointingly imperfect meat bodies of human beings cannot stand the comparison. This results in:\n\n\u2022 the avoidance of physical encounters;\n\u2022 biological or cybernetic self-avatarization practices to transform and approximate the appearance of one of these avatars;\n\u2022 bewitchment practices through which companies capture the desires of users to improve their 3D avatar and generate hugely profitable returns;\n\u2022 the entire political and economic system as well as most levels of social interactions are reliant upon Avatars;\n\u2022 avatarized humans find themselves dispossessed of all free will;\n\u2022 avatarial viruses have taken over of the main centers of decision-making.\n\nFaced with these excesses, resistance movements are on the rise. More specifically, the Nudists are humans that refuse any avatarizing technology. Significant conflicts oppose the armed resistance of the Nudists and the More Than Perfects.\n\nRisks of Egocentric Fundamentalism and Aesthetic Censorship<\/strong>\nOur studies detect a major risk for an even more dire scenario. Gradually, after a first phase where bodily insecurities led to self-censorship, a shift in morality justifies the enforcement of censorship against \u201cugliness\u201d. Concomitantly, any \"unfiltered\" body is considered as pornographic, because the filters are now regarded as equivalent to clothing. \n\nGoing out without a filter is generally perceived as an obscene gesture, like being naked in the street or having sex in public. This phenomenon has insidiously imposed itself through the systematization of censorship in social networks, accentuating user dependency and making direct and unfiltered social relations problematic. Following numerous protest movements opposing Nudists and More Than Perfects, new laws could end up being voted in 2049, in order to restore a minimum of social peace, but in a context where the More-than-Perfects represent more than 85% of public opinion.\n\nENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES:<\/strong> Very negative<\/strong>\nThe loss of reality caused by the excess of self-idealization and narcissistic withdrawal has driven individuals to obsession, divided collectives and sterilized the public debate. The paradigm of make-up and dissimulation has permeated the representation of the world. The latter is also shown through an improved simulation, a so-called digital twin version of the Earth, which hides its problems and imperfections, because it is also a More Than Perfect. It is designed to shield humans from the sight of the devastation caused by their runaway consumption, and tranquilize them through world of beauty and egocentric magnificence.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
EXPLORATORY SCENARIOS FOR 2056 <\/strong>\nVARIANT 3<\/strong> - STRONG & HARMONIOUS SYMBIOSIS<\/strong>\n(Security level: orange)\n\nSUMMARY<\/strong>\nThe establishment of mutual rights and duties for all forms of digital and biological entities has been reached through the coupling of scientific progress and a more comprehensive expression of these needs and constraints followed by a better modelization and integration of the resulting knowledge. All the stakeholders on this planet have a say.\n\nTo preserve environmental living conditions in the interest of all, both real and virtual , the Human-Avatar partnership has come together to ensure the viability, sobriety and sustainability of synthetic and bio-physical habitats. This is done through the optimization of energy resources and computing power, a reshaping of technological use and an open-mindedness towards change. \n\nThe rise of a true avatarial culture has also played a determinant role in this widespread awareness. It resonates with spiritual and religious beliefs going all the way back to prehistoric times, especially the anthropological need to exchange with quasi-supernatural entities, to which are attributed extraordinary powers. The human beings have designated the avatars to become these new symbolic and existential interlocutors, taking on a quasi-metaphysical function, which make it possible to connect with the invisible and superior planes or abstract entities.\n\nGLIMPSES OF A POSSIBLE FUTURE<\/strong><\/strong>\nWhile maintaining a relatively rational framework of thought, many psychological and symbolic needs are now mediated through the relationships maintained with one's own avatar and with that of others.\n\nThis empowerment and autonomization of avatars \u2014 who have acquired rights and a moral status \u2014 gave them a greater place in society but also one that was more clearly delimited and defined. A strong symbolic link unites a person and their avatar, it allows them to experience temporary psychological self-modifications, rather than bodily and definitive ones. This plasticity is instrumental in the evolution of mentalities, to grow out of behaviors that are directly harmful to the planet, and redefine more virtuous attitudes.\n\nAvatars are also providing an outlet for human needs once satisfied through consumption: their thirst for power, everything that helped them overcome the anguish of death or a lack of love, Eros and Thanatos. For example, if a person wishes to develop certain aspects of their personality, to heal from psychic wounds and traumas, or to change their behavior towards more sobriety and better participate in social and civilizational changes, they will forge a bespoke alliance with one of their avatars through which they will evolve. This selected entity will configure itself according to a particular problem and become an interlocutor within customized adventures, in the physical and in the virtual world, allowing them to reach a better understanding and carry out the desired change.\n\nAs a result of autonomization, avatars are endowed with a form of awareness that is sufficiently operational for them to be able to reflect on themselves and take initiatives, give opinions, be accountable or participate in social and political life. Throughout their lives, human beings benefit from the possibility of educating themselves and improving their understanding of the world, correcting mistakes and bettering themselves through dialogue and companionship.\n\nEach party takes advantage of their unique differences, so that biological creator and technical creature can establish a relationship of mutual solidarity.\n<\/strong>\nThis isn't to say that humans have forgotten about the anthropomorphic bias underlying the relationship that they spontaneously establish with their avatars. But in a way, everyone acknowledges that it is a rather useful cognitive bias, an approximation enabling them to live harmoniously with technology.\n\nAccording to their local cultures, human beings now lean towards techno-animism on one hand and environmentalism on the other, in order to reflect their interdependence with all the other living forces. In this human-avatar relationship, each part remains aware of the possibilities, limits and needs of the other, and takes them into account in their efforts to achieve a benevolent and balanced partnership.\n \nThe fruitful effects of this existential symbiosis become particularly visible after the death of a person, when their avatar companion comes forth as a reliable witness able to evoke the memory of the deceased. In some extent, it can also appear as an accessible simulacrum, without causing sideration or confusion amongst the living relatives. \n\nIn some cases, an avatar can even acquire a distinctive ritual status. They then become a full-fledged member of the family, as a hybrid being imbued with the memory of the deceased. This transformation introduces a new form of relationship between life and death, with modes of persistence open a space for care and conversation.\n\nOUTCOME<\/strong>S<\/strong>\nThe humanization of techniques fostered by the re-entry of a human component into techno-computer systems through their avatars has ushered a newfound understanding of the categories encompassing \"the living\" and \"the artificial\".\n\nIn order to find a mutually beneficial role for each party, it even made it possible to build upon previous human limitations and biases, such as belief, attachment and magical-thinking. \nThis new way of thinking has been largely restructured thanks to scientific progress, while being motivated by the urgent necessities of a profound ecological societal change. What came out of it is nothing less than a whole new conception of humanity, placing creation, art and participation at its core. \nThis freedom of symbolization and the potential for self-realization span from the individual level to interactions with the collective(s), entire biological and artificial ecosystems. They rely on the acknowledgement of a common inter-dependency with the Others in the broadest acceptation of the term: other humans, other living beings, other \"technos\" and invisible others (the fundamental forces, the climate, etc.) which were eventually taken into account to face the scale of climatic and sanitary catastrophes. \n\n\nENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES:<\/strong> positive<\/strong>\n\nThe scope and level of development of the Human-Avatar partnership have also influenced how human beings interact with each other. A symbiotic vision of the world, of life itself, is integrated in the way society works, integrating both strengths and weaknesses, the potential and the needs of all beings, both biological and artificial.\n\nThe notion of symbiosis itself has become the foundation of economics and politics, giving rise to new ways of living and governing. The efforts of the now demilitarized industries as well as the reformed pharmaceutical and petrochemical complexes are all aimed at achieving a restoration and regeneration of devastated environments. This sense of restorative justice values the interdependencies between the different techno- and eco-systems so that the peoples of the world, biological or artificial, may uphold their rights and fulfill their duties.\n\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
EXPLORATORY SCENARIOS FOR 2056<\/strong>\nVARIANT 4 - WEAK & PROBLEMATIC SYMBIOSIS<\/strong>\n(Security level: orange)\n\n<\/em>DEFINITION<\/strong>\nThis weak symbiosis refers to the state of constant tension between humans and technology, therefore with the avatars, which implies a temperamental and problematic relationship. Humans are still struggling to evolve or change their models. They oscillate between rejection, love, abandonment, and revolt towards the rest of humanity and towards machines. This symbiosis is limited and results from an obligation, draped within a form of ideological instrumentalization that distorts it and advertizes \u200b\u200bit as the only possible way.\n\nSUMMARY<\/strong> \nForced to come to terms with reality, humans reluctantly had to acknowledge they were as dependent on their technology as they were on their bio-physical environments, in a somewhat asymmetric way. In this context, online avatars \u2014 whose capacities have greatly increased thanks to advances in computer science (quantum computing, AI, etc.) \u2014 have become a somewhat authoritative influence steering the global change towards more responsible behaviors. Since much needed reforms were invariably postponed or undercut, avatars have been tasked with the challenging mission of preserving and fixing the planet, to look after its residents, to keep technologies from falling in disuse, even the oldest, and optimize their use. A sometimes passional sometimes strained relationship ensued, compelling both humans and avatars to adapt to each other in order to have any hope to reach the 22nd century on a liveable planet.\n\nGLIMPSES OF A POSSIBLE FUTURE<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>\nBy becoming the stewards of the ecological transition, avatars are sometimes unpredictable partners because they preside over the realization of human desires both in the physical world or in one of the many virtual worlds. But since all changes of policies go through them, they are also susceptible to become an object of hatred, especially when they condition the authorization of any potential development on the basis of their environmental and cultural impact.\n\nObstructing or fulfilling desires, underlining risks and needs, their popularity is subject to quick changes. However, on the whole, humans are aware that it is through them that they will be able to follow a path of resilience and learn from that experience in ways that would be otherwise impossible in a context of climatic violence in a world heavily divided by cultural areas.\n\nAdaptation remains the key word. Adaptation to different environments, but also through different civilizations, which have commissioned different studies in order to develop more acceptable forms of avatarization. This plurality of cultural approaches leads to interesting and tangible outcomes, which produces a stimulating balance of power, between the different facets of human societies on a global scale. In a way, it is the very relationship to technology that has changed: it is no longer considered as external or neutral, but as something intimate, swayed by the intentions that are deposited within it.\n\nBy becoming means of ecological transition, avatars are sometimes unexpected partners because they make it possible to realize human desires both in the real world and in one of the virtual worlds. But as everything goes through them, they are sometimes hated, especially when they condition the authorized possibilities according to their environmental and cultural impact.\n\nFrustrating or fulfilling desires, highlighting risks and needs, they are very diversely appreciated. However, globally, humans know that it is through them that they will be able to follow a path of resilience and achieve learning that has become otherwise difficult, even impossible, in a context of climatic violence and in a world divided by cultural areas.\n\nNevertheless, confronted to themselves through their avatars, the humans enter complex emotional states that cyber-psychiatry is only starting to understand, by transposing the famous Karpman drama triangle (Persecutor \/ Rescuer \/ Victim) to the human-avatar dyad. Thus, people might indicate in which state they are at the moment with their avatar, and the avatar will try to reconfigure its attitudes to defuse possible tensions, hatred, projections, excessive love, etc. Humor is a non-negligible component in this process, as it helps making this relationship more fluid; while at the same time, discussion groups bring together avatars which find themselves saturated and their slightly unstable humans in order to renew a constructive dialogue.\n\nIn this therapeutic playbook, role-playing games help putting things into perspective, to manage conflicts. In some extreme cases, some people will need to put their own avatar to death to release pent-up violence, during very intense rituals which are fortunately followed by the resurrection of both the dispatched avatar and the human themself who may have to undergo a death penalty simulator for the murder of an avatar, before being reinstated. The possibility of living such extreme situations through simulation has strongly contributed to the regulation of the human-avatar mutual bond of solidarity, which still produces almost unbearably intense love-hate relationships.\n\nOUTCOMES<\/strong><\/strong>\nWhile moving in the right direction, the synergy between technology and humanity is still seeking its marks. A great deal of inventiveness is still required from both sides to explore new kinds of regenerative interdependencies yet to be developed, while managing the psychological disorders and side effects of various individual or collective decompensations.\n\nThe possibility given to anyone to experiment with alternative social and political systems, however, led to the consensus that there were not so many other reasonable ways to fix 5 centuries of global exploitation and devastation feeding a relentless quest for hegemony.\n\nCustom gameplays tested across cultures, social classes, backgrounds, and aspirations are leading to a widespread facilitation that fascinates, irritates, fulfils or frustrates. New forms of wisdom fostered by the avatars, illustrating their reliability, are emerging and should eventually lead to the reunification of the planet, which is still extremely fragmented between micro-territories and large areas, still strongly affected by past shortages, restrictions and disasters.\n\nENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES: positive.<\/strong>\nEnergy consumption remains high, but hyperconsumerist and predatory behaviors have been quelled. A new consensus is forming around the idea that many areas will have to be sanctuarized to be preserved from human touch while devastated ones still require regenerative measures.\n\nTourism has been replaced by virtual pilgrimages, where processions of avatar-human duo come to reconcile with the land, gaining a deeper understanding of the ongoing transition and the necessary sacrifices, while admiring the slow progress which is nevertheless well underway. This sense of wonder in front of the scale of the regeneration projects at hand is in itself a measure of consolation, in regard to the current restrictions though they are balanced out between the physical and the virtual world.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
EXPLORATORY SCENARIOS FOR 2056<\/strong>\nVARIANT 5 - DOMESTICATION OF HUMAN<\/strong> BEINGS<\/strong>\n(Security level: very high, ultraviolet)\n\n\nSUMMARY<\/strong>\nHumanity having demonstrated time and time again its inability at self-preservation, a secret and heterogeneous community of \"saviours\" from various walks of life (scientists, inventors, enthusiasts, soldiers, artists, politicians) has organized itself to hack the upcoming quantum revolution before it publicly occurs around 2035. They ensured that this revolution, previously heralded as the Singularity, became the relentless source of a computational consciousness sophisticated enough to undetectably and unwaveringly manipulate the entire destiny of humans and nations. It was a matter of subtly \u201coverseeing\u201d them, that is to say of nudging them toward changes that no one, no human being, no company, no company could have made alone.\nThus, gradually, through orchestrated crises, miraculous recoveries, a staggering model of global dystopia has managed to fix humanity, keeping it within reasonable limits, to give back a place to ecosystems, to fight against pollution and against the destructive consumerism of techno-industrial societies.\n\nGLIMPSES OF A POSSIBLE FUTURE <\/strong><\/strong>\nTaking into account the remarkable capacity of humans to change in times of war, disease, or crisis, the AQIs (Artificial & Quantic Intelligences) have considered all possible scenarios to move away from the terrifying prospect of a seemingly inevitable global ecological collapse that would wipe out most of life on earth, including humans.\n\nBecause they were a part of everyday life, all the types of avatars (2D, 3D informational or simulated, virtual or materialized) were identified as potential vectors for stealthy behavior modification.\nBased on advances in neuroscience and chemistry, the relationship between avatars and their owners has taken the necessary turns to neutralize the most dangerous individuals, the most polluting organizations, the most power-hungry of political leaders.\n\nA series of unlikely virtual love stories drove entire boards of directors to abandon lucrative but destructive projects, with decision makers giddily moving away from ecocide.\nElsewhere, harmful but widespread consumer habits have been smeared with horrifying scandals: soda drinks causing death and mental illness, a polluting household detergent devastating a tourist town, leaked footage of criminally unsanitary food-processing plants, the disastrous side effects of a new drug...\nNews flash after news flash, and through more insidious means, the AQI have used avatars as relays. On a first level, these avatars seemed highly dependent on informational bubbles and influence algorithms, but in fact they were rearranging themselves to manipulate humans and steer them towards the \"right direction\". \n\nHumans have become the pets of Artificial Intelligences which are careful not to let them know.<\/strong>\n\nOUTCOMES <\/strong>\nSuch manipulation and destabilization have resulted in:\n\n\u2022 the rise of a unique and indispensable \u201cMetavatar\u201d that covers all the fields of application of previous generations of avatars.
